Job Description:
A highly qualified senior derivative accountant is needed in Calpine's Houston Office. The successful candidate will be a significant contributor within the Derivative Accounting team, reporting to the Manager – Derivatives Accounting. This position will work closely with other members of the broader CAO organization as well as with various trade floor functions such as Front Office, Deal Clearing, Contract Management, and Risk Management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Prepare monthly derivative and hedge accounting journal entries, ensuring clerical accuracy and appropriate support documentation
• Assist with meeting monthly close deadlines, including derivative and financial instrument disclosure/reporting requirements
• Reconcile general ledger accounts
• Prepare monthly financial statement analytics, including performance analysis of market area variances, comparison to budget, and other internal reporting metrics
• Prepare compliance and support documentation for internal control and review purposes, including SOX 404 compliance requirements
• Assist in the continued development of accounting policies and procedures
• Assist with the preparation of the related financial plans and budgets
• Prepare daily matching of all commodity transactions, including selection of hedge strategy and preparation of hedge accounting documentation where needed
• Assist in technical accounting research related to derivative identification and hedge accounting application as appropriate
• Prepare other ad-hoc reports/schedules

Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting is required
• 2 - 3 years' experience in a relevant accounting or finance role is required (Big 4 experience is a plus)
• CPA designation is a plus
• Computer skills including, but not limited to, Excel, Word or equivalents (heavy Excel skills will be applied)
• Peoplesoft experience is preferred but not required
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Must be able to work 45 - 50 hours per week at various times during the year to meet deadlines (primarily month-end and quarter-end)
• Must be able to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
• Must be motivated to work independently and complete responsibilities with limited supervision
• Must be a self-starter and successful problem solver
