Stronger recovery readiness with a smaller DR footprint

A global manufacturing enterprise depended on highly available systems across its production and engineering operations. Its existing disaster recovery (DR) footprint included 28 servers, yet it lacked a validated approach to failover and defined recovery targets. Aditi Consulting redesigned the on-premises DR environment around the client’s business continuity requirements. The new architecture reduced the footprint from 28 servers to 8. The client estimated that annual DR operating costs would fall by 82%.

The Challenge

Building recovery readiness without duplicating production

The Challenge

Production workloads were concentrated in a single location. Although it had a 28-server DR footprint, it lacked an environment capable of validated failover.

Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) were undefined or untested, while recovery processes were manual and fragmented. The existing infrastructure-heavy approach also increased operational complexity and maintenance overhead.

The client needed to strengthen business continuity and establish measurable recovery requirements without replicating its production environment at full scale.

The Solution

Design recovery around the workloads that matter

The Solution

Aditi analyzed the workloads the client needed to support during recovery, then designed and implemented a streamlined on-premises DR environment around defined RTO and RPO targets.

  • Right-sized the infrastructure: Rationalized workloads and consolidated the DR footprint from 28 servers to 8.
  • Defined and validated recovery targets: Established RTO and RPO requirements to guide the architecture and provide a basis for assessing recovery readiness.
  • Standardized operational controls: Used configuration and version management to support consistent deployments, and integrated incident management into the recovery workflow.

The approach reduced the infrastructure the client had to maintain while keeping the design focused on its business continuity requirements.

Business Outcomes

A smaller DR footprintThe client reduced its DR environment from 28 servers to 8, simplifying infrastructure management and maintenance.
Lower estimated operating costsThe client estimated an 82% reduction in annual DR operating costs following the redesign.
Clearer recovery readinessDefined and validated RTO and RPO targets gave the client measurable recovery requirements and a more structured approach to business continuity.

What Changed

The client’s DR environment is now designed around the workloads it needs to recover and the targets that recovery must meet.

Instead of carrying a larger infrastructure footprint without validated recovery requirements, the client has a leaner architecture and clearer processes for managing recovery readiness.
